My great, great grandfather, David C. Woodruff, volunteered as a corporal in the 1st NC Infantry, Company B, on May 31, 1861. (His older brother, Daniel, joined the Union Army.) David C. Woodruff is listed in the Roll of Honor as having sustained a severe wound of the thigh at the Battle of Antietam, a wound of the neck at Chancellorsville, and was severely wounded for a third time at the Battle of Mine Run, Virginia. He was captured by the Union Army in May 1864 and was sent to Point Lookout Prison as a prisoner of war. He also spent time at Elmira Prison in New York where he took the oath of allegiance on June 21, 1865. D.C. Woodruff returned to Wilkes County, N.C. after the war, married, and became the father of 8 children. He died in 1899 at age 65.

My GGGrandfather served from Feb 1862 until his capture sometime on the 2nd day of Gettysburg, believed to be on/about Culp's Hill. After an interim stay at Ft. Delaware he was settled to Point Lookout. He later released in first prisoner exchange ending up at Chimborazo Hospital.

There was talk in my family many years ago that he was pictured with two others as captured Confederates. I have been trying to find any identities of these 3 men, the picture is rather famous as I see it posted everywhere, even at the beginning of the movie Gettysburg - three Confederates casually waiting for their destiny - looking somewhat glad that they did no have to fight further.

His unit on that day succeeded at Seminary Ridge, but, were decimated on the 3rd. If he was not captured when he was I would Probably not be HERE.

'Benj' Isley was my great, great, grandfather. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, and admitted to the Receiving Wayside Hospital, or General Hospital No. 9, Richmond, Va. The nature of the wound was to the left hip, and is believed to have been a bullet wound. He was furloughed home to Graham, NC for 60 days on May 20th. During this furlough his wife (Barbara) Isley became pregnant with a son named after him (and my great grandfather). After recovering from his wound he returned to his unit, and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek Oct. 19, 1864.
